The best fit to the research data based on 519 staff from 18 schools created five distinct motivation profiles.  Two of these fall into the ‘high on success orientation and low on failure avoidance’ quadrant.  The first of these the researchers labelled ‘Success oriented’ as they fit the characteristics of this quadrant very well.

The next quadrant to look at is high on success orientation but also high on failure avoidance.  These individuals are referred to as ‘over-striving’ – potential failure is threatening so such individuals may experience high anxiety, self-doubt, and uncertainty about future outcomes.

We can think of motivation as being blue zone and adaptive – we are success oriented in the things we do.  We can also think of motivation as being red zone and maladaptive – we strive to avoid failure.  Adaptive in this context means that the activity helps us grow healthily.  Maladaptive means that our mental and physical health are prejudiced in some way, for example, through anxiety or stress.
